Camp Policies and Procedures
General Information
- All camp activities will take place at Historic Hanna’s Town. The Westmoreland Historical Society is headquartered at Hanna’s Town and oversees educational programs and other historic or interpretive features of the site. The grounds are part of the Westmoreland County Park system.
- Camp runs Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is designed for children 6-12 years old.
- There are no childcare options available at Historic Hanna’s Town.
- Guardians are not permitted to accompany their child during camp. Anyone with questions or concerns about camp should speak with the Education & Interpretation Manager beforehand.
Registration
- Registration includes camp activities within one designated week.
- Guardians will complete permission forms for the camper including health information and photo releases. This permission form must be completed before camp begins.
- All information provided by and about the camper and guardian(s) will remain strictly confidential.
Preparing for Camp
What to Wear
Clothing and Footwear
- Campers should be prepared to spend camp outdoors and in buildings that may not have air conditioning. They should wear clothing that can get dirty and are appropriate for the day’s weather conditions.
- Campers must wear closed-toe shoes (no flip-flops or Crocs).
Sunscreen and insect repellant
- Campers should wear sunscreen and insect repellant. Many camp activities will take place outside and may involve being in direct sunlight. Our gardens support pollinators, so insects are common outdoors and occasionally in our old buildings. Please apply sunscreen and insect repellant to campers before arriving at camp. Campers may also apply sunscreen and insect repellant to themselves.
What to Bring
Lunch
- Campers should bring a packed lunch that does not require refrigeration or other preparation. We do not provide lunch or snacks. You will be notified ahead of time if camp activities involve food.
- We ask that campers not share food with others due to medical and dietary concerns.
Extras to Bring
- Campers should bring a refillable water bottle to carry with them during outdoor activities.
- Bring a rain jacket and a hat, just in case! These may be left indoors during the week of camp.
Safety, Medication, and Allergies
We are happy to accommodate children with medical needs.
- The permission form sent to guardians after camp registration includes places to disclose medical information to camp staff.
- Historic Hanna’s Town is equipped with First Aid kits for staff and volunteers to treat minor injuries.
- In the event of a medical emergency, the staff will call 911 and notify the camper’s guardians via phone and email immediately.
Medication Administration
- Camp staff and volunteers are not permitted to dispense medications. If campers need medicine during camp, special arrangements must be made for a guardian to come and administer medication. Campers may carry and administer their own medication if a guardian checks that they may self-administer medication on their registration form.
- Please notify the Director of Education at least one week before camp.
Allergies
- Children with food allergies may be seated at a clean, allergen-free lunch table with other children.
- Please be aware that bees and other insects are commonly found in the gardens and old buildings at Hanna’s Town.
- If your child has severe allergies that may require special accommodations, please speak with the Director of Education.
Epinephrine
- Children who need epinephrine are permitted to carry and self-administer their own medication in the event of an emergency.
- Guardians should approve self-administer medication on their registration form notify the Director of Education at least one week before camp.
- In the event that the child cannot administer their own epinephrine, a trained staff member may administer it. Staff will call 911 and notify the camper’s guardians via phone and email.
Personal property
- Campers may bring cell phones, but they must remain in their backpacks until camp is dismissed. Camp staff and volunteers will reach out to guardians via email or phone in the case of an emergency.
- Campers may not bring toys, games, or cameras; if they do, they must remain in their backpacks until camp is dismissed. If any item is causing a distraction, camp staff may confiscate these items and return them to the camper’s guardian at the end of the day.
- The Westmoreland Historical Society is not responsible for lost or broken items. If lost items are discovered at Hanna’s Town, a lost and found box will be kept until the end of summer.
Camper Behavior expectations
- Our behavior expectations for camp are simple: everyone is to respect one another and respect the site’s historic and natural resources.
- We encourage children to have fun at Hanna’s Town while remaining mindful of the fragile resources we hold in public trusts, such as our historic buildings, historic and reproduction artifacts, classrooms and exhibit spaces, and our natural environments like gardens and trails.
- We also expect camp participants to respect those who want to teach and learn, including fellow campers, staff, volunteers, interns, and presenters. Learn more about our site policies.
Drop-Off and Pick-Up Procedures
- Those who are planning to use an online map should enter the address of 809 Forbes Trail Road, Greensburg, PA 15601 or the words “Historic Hanna’s Town” into the search engine – not “Hannastown.” The village of Hannastown is a former coal-company town located nearby, though it is not related to the historic site.
Parking
- Parking is available at the Education Center and near the Fort.
Sign-in/Sign-out Policies
- Sign in time: 9:45-10:00 a.m.
- Sign out: 4:00–4:15 p.m.
- Campers must be signed in and signed out by an approved adult every day. Guardians can list adults who are allowed to sign them out in the Camper Safety form. For the safety of campers, anyone picking up a camper may be asked to present ID (this includes guardians and approved adults).
